The Department of Diagnostic Imaging offers a range of outstanding diagnostic services including digital X-ray, DEXA, Ultrasound, Computed Tomography (CT), 3D Mammogram as well as interventional procedures. A year-round 24-hour service is provided in a comfortable environment with guaranteed privacy.
X-ray is an electromagnetic radiation with a very short wavelength, which has a special characteristic of penetration through the body.
Use of X-ray includes:
- General plain X-ray such as head, nasopharynx, paranasal sinuses, chest, abdomen, spine and body bones or joints
- Whole spine scanogram – for scoliosis
- Bone Densitometry (DEXA)
Ultrasound uses high frequency sound wave to produce images of tissues in the body. Radiation is not involved during the examination, so it is very safe for pregnant women.
- Upper and lower abdomen such as liver, gallbladder, bile duct, kidneys, pancreas, spleen, aorta, inferior vena cava, bladder, ovaries, uterus, prostate and scrotum
- Brain examination for new-born babies
- Doppler or colour examination such as veins and arteries of upper and lower extremities
- Breast examination
- Thyroid examination
- Ultrasound guided procedure such as fine needle aspiration, biopsy, tapping or drainage
COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY (CT)
The hospital is equipped with a GE Revolution CT scanner. The scanning techniques have improved the speed, coverage, power energy and resolution.
Revolution CT reduces the radiation dose as well as the amount of contrast medium. It can be used not only for adults, but also for children. The large gantry is designed to be 80 cm, which effectively reduces the fear of claustrophobia caused by the scanning gantry to the patient. In addition, the detector is 16cm wide, which can cover the entire heart. This completely solves the problem of layering in the past and avoiding misdiagnosis caused by stepped artifacts. During the examination, the patient only needs to hold the breath once to complete the scan. For the patients who cannot hold their breath, the scan can also be performed by increasing the speed of the table movement.
Clinical use of CT scan includes:
- Scanning all parts of the body and all organs
- CT angiogram
- 3D image reconstructions
- CT guided aspiration, drainage or biopsy
Mammogram is used to detect and diagnose breast cancer in women. Hologic Selenia Dimensions greatly improves the diagnostic accuracy of detecting tumors and micro-calcifications through 3D stereoscopic multi-slice combined imaging software, which results in a low dose mammogram with superior clinical performance compared with plain 2D mammogram alone. It also reduces the problem of tissue overlapping and removes the structural noise. By creating multiple layers of imaging, 3D mammogram can reveal problem areas in dense tissue. Women with dense breasts get the greatest benefit from 3D mammography.
If there is any suspicious lesion found, medical procedures such as vacuum assisted biopsy (VAB), stereotactic breast biopsy or hookwire localization can be done by the radiology team.
